Wilfredo Murillo: “The legal sector is one of the industries in which more work remains to be done in relation to its transformation and implementation of innovation and technology”

Our partner in Peru, Wilfredo Murillo, who has been leading, for the last few months, the presidency of the legal sector of the services union of the Lima Chamber of Commerce (CCL), shares the problems of the legal sector and its possible solutions for Gestión TV.

In his reflections, framed within the program “Consultorio de Negocios”, he explains that in the last three years the legal sector has been transformed, since “we have a lot to do in terms of competitiveness”. As our partner rightly states, “it is one of the industries in which more work remains to be done regarding its transformation and the implementation of innovation and technology“.

Terms such as ‘Legal Innovation’, ‘Legal Design’, ‘LegalTech’, ‘Legal Operation’ and ‘Legal Project’ have entered the vocabulary of all those involved in this sector. “More and more lawyers and more players of this sector know about these tools that contribute to the transformation” explains Wilfredo.

During 2016 only six events were organized focused on talking about these topics. However, currently, about 70 events are dedicated to this. “It is still not enough. We believe, with our information, that this has reached only 30% of the market players” he says. To change this situation, Wilfredo puts forward some possible solutions:

Macro level

• Considering the need to collect and systematize the current data of the legal industry.
• Reviewing and working on changing the perception of the lawyer’s role in society: reformulation of the curriculum or university training of lawyers.
• Formalization of the professional activity by creating an association that promotes competitiveness and transformation of the industry.
• Implementin an investment plan in technology-based infrastructure for the development of the lawyer’s activities, with the objective of creating a union between the public and private sectors.

Micro level

• Investment prioritization and change of mentality of the leaders of the legal sector.
• Use of organization, structure, indicators and efficient leadership or management models at any level.
• Professionalization and promotion of independence in the management of the actors that govern the different areas of the sector.
• Greater commitment and investment in professionals who support the industry with specific tools.
• Change in the relationship between lawyers and other complementary support professions.
• Promotion of equity, diversity and inclusion in organizations.
