Latin America’s legal market has seen a wave of rebranding efforts in recent years, as firms seek ways to adapt and keep up with the modern demands of the sector.

With Latin American firms facing increasing pressure to modernise their operations, many are turning to their in-house business development and market functions to oversee their rebranding strategies. Latin Lawyer has explored this trend in depth, examining what it truly takes to bring a law firm’s brand to life.

According to Marc, establishing a clear identity reduces uncertainty in three key areas: talent decisions, client selection and market positioning. When it comes to talent, brand clarity “functions as an internal coordination device”, signalling to the labour market what type of firm it is and what career opportunities it offers.

Rebranding: A Successful Brand Must Differentiate the Firm

Above all, a successful brand must differentiate the firm. Avoiding weak branding is critical — one of the most common mistakes in the Latin American legal market, according to Gericó.

Among the most frequent pitfalls are founder-centric brands, inconsistent language across jurisdictions and visual identities that mimic international firms. These approaches dilute strategic positioning and fail to build long-term equity.

Regardless of scale, business development, communications and marketing teams sit at the centre of these transformations.

As Gericó explains, these three functions “act as an integrated execution system” during a rebrand. Business development ensures that the new brand is defensible in pitches and rooted in client relationships; marketing guarantees operational coherence across all platforms; and communications safeguards reputation and consistency.

Rebranding also demands cross-functional coordination beyond BD and marketing. At an international level, for example, Clifford Chance worked alongside project managers, IT and real estate teams — spanning everything from website programming to office refurbishment — with the support of external consultants across research, conceptualisation, strategy and implementation.
