A few months ago, during a meeting with the management committee of a mid-market law firm, one of the partners voiced a concern shared by many: “We do not understand why we are not where we deserve to be.”

The figures were strong, client loyalty was high, and the team was solid. However, when analysing how the firm appeared in the media, rankings, and market conversations, the contrast was evident: limited, reactive and fragmented visibility, with no underlying strategy. The issue was not legal quality, but perception. The firm was excellent, yet the market had no reason to know it. Excellence that is not visible ceases to compete.

Not a sudden disruption, but a structural shift

We are witnessing a turning point in how reputation -and therefore client and talent acquisition- is approached in the legal sector. This is not a sudden disruption, but a structural change in the way the market evaluates, compares, and selects law firms.

Today, reputation is no longer an ancillary attribute or a soft intangible that naturally follows good legal work. It has become a strategic factor influencing growth, talent acquisition, and competitive positioning.

For years, many firms operated under the assumption that technical excellence would inevitably lead to recognition. That logic is no longer effective. The market is more transparent, better informed, and less tolerant of silence. Clients compare firms more rigorously, specialised media exercise stricter editorial selection, rankings amplify narratives, and talent increasingly observes which firms project leadership, coherence, and strategic vision.

This shift has exposed an uncomfortable reality: a growing gap between excellent firms and visible firms. Many practices possess strong technical capability, robust operations, and high-performing teams, yet fail to translate that value into market recognition.

Reputation as a growth lever

Reputation does not operate in isolation; rather, it results from the alignment of several dimensions, including digital positioning, media presence, and performance in legal rankings and directories. Directories reward not merely volume of work, but narrative coherence and consistent performance. Specialist legal media function not as shop windows but as validators of thought leadership. Strategy must therefore determine which practice areas, partners, and messages require amplification. When these three elements are misaligned, the outcome is noise; when aligned, reputation becomes a genuine driver of growth.

A frequent mistake is confusing visibility with exposure. Communicating more does not mean communicating better. Message saturation, hyperactivity across digital channels, and the absence of clear narrative hierarchy are eroding the credibility of some firms. The market does not penalise a lack of communication; it penalises a lack of intent. Saying less, but with greater focus, has become a competitive advantage. Many firms generate noise, but far fewer deploy strategic communications as a business-aligned tool.

The impact of reputation extends beyond external perception. It directly affects critical business variables, influencing fee-setting, the quality and type of opportunities received, and the attraction and retention of talent. Firms with strong reputations are less dependent on price competition, whereas those that fail to manage reputation strategically become trapped in reactive dynamics, with reduced strategic autonomy.
