Recently, the new edition of The Legal 500 EMEA (Europe, Middle East & Africa), one of the most relevant guides for the legal sector (together with Chambers and Partners), has been published. This guide covers Europe, the Middle East and Africa, with more than 80 recognized countries and more than 2,700 firms featured in its rankings, which serve as a reference for the legal sector.

In Legal 500, independent research is carried out (you cannot pay to obtain recognition) for several months, where the work of the past year, the experience and depth of the team, and the opinions of clients are analysed, among other points.
In Spain, this year 28 areas and sub-areas of practice are covered, including a wide range of practices, from the classic Banking and Finance, Capital Markets, Dispute Resolution, Labour and M&A, to some focused on specific industries such as Food, Health, and ‘Retail’ or retail sales, among others. In some practice areas, as a novelty, the ‘Firms to Watch’ category is incorporated, where those firms with good growth potential in the coming years in their areas are highlighted.
Something interesting to highlight is that, unlike the controversy that occurred with Chambers last year, in this directory, for the moment, they do not separate Barcelona from the rest of Spain.
Regarding the rankings, by analysing the ‘Tier 1’ (the highest category) of some areas considered key such as Banking and Finance, M&A, Dispute Resolution, Labour and Tax, several interesting perspectives can be obtained on the current legal landscape and the reputation of these firms in their respective specialties.
Widespread presence and specialisation
A first point of interest is the recurring presence of certain firms in multiple practice areas in Tier 1, which indicates a combination of high specialisation and versatility. Firms such as Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, Cuatrecasas, Garrigues, Linklaters, and Uría Menéndez appear in several categories, highlighting their competence in a wide range of legal services. This suggests not only a great depth of experience in multiple fields but also the ability to offer a comprehensive service to its clients
Market leadership
It is notable that Garrigues and Uría Menéndez, two of the largest firms in Spain, as well as international firms such as Allen & Overy, Clifford Chance, and Linklaters, consistently demonstrate their excellence in key areas of law.
Diversity of specialization
The diversity in Tier 1 areas of specialization, from banking and finance law to labor and tax law, shows the breadth of services that leading law firms must offer to meet the needs of their clients. While some firms such as Cuatrecasas, Garrigues, and Uría Menéndez exhibit a strong presence in almost all the aforementioned areas, others, such as Sagardoy Abogados, stand out in specific niches, in this case, Labour Law. This reflects a market strategy in which some firms opt for deeper specialization, while others seek a more diversified practice.
